Celebrate the 4th of July with an easy and delicious Strawberry Jello Cake Flag Cake recipe, decorating with strawberries, blueberries, and whipped cream for a festive dessert.
Don't you just love summer? It's when berry season rolls around, we have 4th of July desserts and BBQ to look forward to, and it's the perfect time to make both a Strawberry Jello Cake Flag Cake and a lemon cake.
I've wanted to make an American flag cake for a long time, but for some reason or another, I've just never gotten it done. This year I finally did it, and it was super easy to make.
Like my red white and blue poke cake, this is a semi-homemade recipe, meaning it's sorta homemade. Instead of making a homemade cake, I use a cake mix.
You can use any vanilla flavor cake mix, but I really like the flavor that French vanilla adds.
It also fits the description of semi-homemade because we use a strawberry Jello mix. It is a Jello poke cake recipe, after all.
For the topping, I use my favorite homemade whipped cream. However, you can use a buttercream frosting or even a cream cheese frosting if you want; cream cheese frosting would definitely add a sweet and tangy flavor to the cake.
Be sure to use fresh berries too (versus frozen) to make your American flag design.
Tips for how to make a strawberry Jello cake:
Gather your ingredients… You'll need a French vanilla cake mix, water, eggs, canola oil, and a strawberry Jello mix.
Mix your cake mix and bake it, according to the package directions, in a 13″x9″ cake pan.
Mix together the cake mix, water, eggs, and canola oil (but be sure to add the appropriate amounts for your particular cake mix; I used Duncan Hines French Vanilla).
When the cake is fully baked, remove it from the oven and allow to cool for about 15 to 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, mix the Jello mix with the boiling water. Then add in the cold water, continuing to mix well.
Poke the top of your cake all over with a fork. You want holes all over the cake, so the juice can really soak into the cake.
Slowly pour the Jello mixture over the entire cake. Then allow the cake to finish cooling.
Once the cake has fully cooled, it's ready to decorate.
Tips for how to make a flag cake:
To make the American flag design, just follow these simple steps:
- Spread whipped cream or Dream Whip (or your preferred white frosting) evenly over the entire cake.
- Wash and dry the berries.
- Add 5 or more rows of blueberries to the top left corner of the cake.
- Stem and slice your strawberries length wise.
- Next begin adding rows of strawberries to create the red stripes for your cake. I added 4 rows of strawberries to my cake.
- Once the whipped cream and berries are on, chill your American flag cake for 3 to 4 hours before serving.
And that's it! It's so simple and easy, and your family will absolutely love it.

Mixer – I love my mixer, and I use it every time I bake.
Cake Pan – You'll need a 13″x9″ rectangular cake pan for this cake.
Cake Tester – Dan bought me a cake tester awhile back, and I'll tell ya, it's come in so handy! Although a toothpick works really well too.
Large Measuring Cup – This will come in handy for mixing up the Jello and water.
Spatula – Where would I be without my spatulas? I have a whole slew of them because we're ALWAYS using them.
Paring Knife – Slicing strawberries requires a paring knife.

Can you make this the night before and leave it in the fridge overnight? Or will the cake get dry/bad? I’ve got a brunch and I don’t really want to wake up at 5am to make it. haha
Hey Sarah, you can definitely make it ahead and put it in the fridge. I actually think it’s a little better the next day.
Awesome. Thanks!
