Want to create awesome memories with your kids this summer? I partnered with Cheerios at Walmart to share this post full of simple ways to carve out those special moments with your kids.
Summer is upon us, and we’re already almost halfway through June. I think it’s the fact that we homeschool, and I always feel so busy through the school year; but this summer I’ve been really determined to slow it down, do some things I personally have wanted to do for awhile now, and at the same time also spend real, honest-to-goodness, fun time with my boys.
Don’t Let Summer Pass You By
How many times have you let summer slip away before you realize that it’s almost time to start school again and you haven’t really done anything you wanted to do? In this day and age, we schedule ourselves out so much that we tucker ourselves out and leave no time for the fun things in life. Kids are scheduled to the max, we’re scheduled to the max… Where’s the time for creativity and boredom and just plain wandering? Because you know, boredom really isn’t all that bad if you think about it. Boredom opens up adventurous avenues for exploration and creativity.
And why do we, as moms, feel like we can’t be a kid at heart and have a little fun?
I propose that it’s time to let our hair down and really have some fun with our kids this summer. Because you know what? There are some pretty amazing memories just waiting to be made.
Simple Ways to Carve Out Special Moments with Your Kids
Explore with your kids. Take walks, go for hikes, explore someplace new. Just one day spent outdoors can make all the difference.Being outside refreshes, energizes, and gives so many opportunities for conversation with your kids. Being outdoors also gives opportunity for quiet moments with your kids, and those quiet moments can be just as special and unforgettable.
Don’t Be Afraid of a Little Mess. In fact, have so much fun playing that you don’t even think about the mess. Shut the “Martha” side of your brain off for a little while, and just go with the flow. Even if Cheerios end up all.over.the.floor… It’s ok! Play with your kids.
Swim with your kids. I once saw a video (from Scary Mommy) that encouraged moms to put on the swimsuit because it’s not the swimsuit our kids will remember; it’s the memory of us they’ll remember. It’s so true. So put on that swimsuit and jump in that pool (or lake or river). Splash your kids, have a water fight, create a swimming pool whirlpool, play Marco Polo. Your kids will love you for it.
Catch Lightning Bugs. Remember the days of running around the yard catching as many fireflies as you could possibly hold in your hand or in a jar? Re-live those moments with your kids.
Pick Something or Grow Something with Your Kids. Pick blueberries or blackberries or peaches or apples or whatever your heart desires. Or go to a local fruit stand/farmer’s market and pick something out with them. Grow a tomato plant or a melon plant or even a flower.
Share a Yummy Snack with Your Kids. Eat watermelon outside. Grab a popsicle. Make cookies. Share something as simple and delicious as a bowl of Cheerios with berries. Speaking of berries… There’s nothing quite as yummy as a bowl of Cheerios with sliced bananas, blackberries, blueberries, or strawberries. Sit on the porch swing or on a quilt under the tree and munch away. Talk about special moments… There’s no telling what stories or dreams your kids will come up with while you’re sitting there eating together.
Read Together. Agree on a book you all want to read, and read a chapter every day. Dr. Seuss had the right idea… Oh the places you’ll go with a good book.
Be Bored Together. Why are we so afraid of boredom? I agree, it’s not good to be idle. But boredom can lead to something extremely positive and creative. It gives kids the freedom to just be, or to do something they never would have done otherwise. A little boredom never hurt anyone.
