Headed out camping soon? I partnered with Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser to share a list of FUN camping essentials.
Camping… Just the mention of that word makes the excitement well up in me! Prepping for a camping trip involves packing all the essential essentials. You know the ones I mean… All those important things that will make your camping trip easier and more doable, all those things you need. BUT in all the prep and packing, it’s easy to forget the FUN! That’s why I’ve come to your rescue with a few things that will add good, old fashioned, family fun to any camping trip. I like to think of these things as the fun essentials that are likely to bring your family closer, help you bond out in the wild wilderness, help you laugh together, help you just enjoy being together. After all, that’s what camping’s all about, right?!
My family loves to wilderness camp… I guess you’d call it primitive camping. With 4-wheel drive and a rooftop tent, the possibilities are endless. We love being where there’s noone else but us, the starry sky, and maybe a bear or other wildlife roaming around (yes, we’ve had a bear in our campsite before). I love the time it gives us together, unplugged and away from the world. Have you ever seen The Wilderness Family movies? That’s our family dream. I’m dead serious.
Anyway, camping should be fun, in my opinion. And that means making sure you’ve packed all the FUN essentials you NEED for family fun.
Below are a few ideas to help you create a family fun camping kit…
Card Games. Grab a few card games to take with you. They’re compact, easy to pack, and FUN! Even if all you take is a deck of cards, there are so many games you can play with 1 deck of cards.
Outdoor Games or Toys… Like a badminton set. Who needs a net? Just grab a couple rackets and birdies. Of course, a frisbee is easy to pack too and generally easy to use wherever you decide to park your tent. If you have little ones and you’re camping in a hot area, maybe grab a few water toys, like splash throw toys.
Bubbles. Yep, they’re essential, especially if you have younger kids. Grab a couple little bottles of Bubbles for more restful fun on your camping trip.
Twizzlers Twists. My family doesn’t go anywhere without our Twizzlers Twists. Every single road trip, every single camping trip, we have a HUGE pack of Strawberry Twizzlers Twists. They’re just the right amount of sweet but not too sweet, and they make the perfect munching snack on a trip.
In fact, I picked up a few bags for our next camping trip on a recent trip to Walmart. We got our usual Strawberry Twizzlers Twists, but we also got a couple new flavors to try, from Fruit Punch Twizzlers Pull N Peel to Strawberry Lemonade Twists. Yum!
Books. Grab a book for yourself, books for the kids, and maybe even a book for the whole family to enjoy around the campfire.
Fishing Equipment. We found out last year that we really enjoy fishing together. It’s so relaxing finding a nice, quiet place to fish, and it’s a pretty cool thing to catch your dinner. Just make sure you’ve got proper licensing wherever you go. We’re hoping to find a lake, pond, or river to camp near on our next camping trip.
Musical Instrument. Jacob plays guitar; so does Dan. If you or your child play an instrument you can easily take with you, take it along on the trip! A guitar is the perfect companion for camping, and I love hearing Jacob play. While I love hearing Jaden play drums, they’re just not quite feasible for camping; and I doubt the animals would love them as much as we do.
Items for Exploration. Don’t forget the binoculars, maybe a field journal, a magnifying glass, and anything else that encourages your family to explore.
And those, my friends, are the beginnings of an absolutely FUN camping essentials kit that you mustn’t forget to pack. Grab one of those colorful back-to-school “milk” crates while you’re out and about picking up all your other camping essentials, and get packing!
